    Curly Cherry

Curly cherry does not have the same type of figure as curly maple and it is very difficult to find outstanding figure.  As with any figured wood you have varying degrees of figure...some good, some better and the best.  Quality figure appears in less than 2% of all the cherry trees harvested.

© Photographer: Peter Wey | Agency: Dreamstime.comCherry that is used in fine woodworking comes from the eastern United States, primarily the Allegheny Range.   It is a red to deep reddish brown heartwood and has a white to yellowish sapwood.
The characteristics of Cherry are that it is of medium weight, it is moderately hard, stiff and strong, and has a fine closed grain. Cherry has excellent machinability and takes a finish well, however light to natural finishes are recommended due to its light color.

Cherry wood contains some distinctive characteristics and beautiful markings which can include gum streaks, mineral deposits and pin knots. Its light pinkish color will age to a beautiful rich reddish brown over time.

Common uses for Cherry include high end furniture, cabinets, interior millwork, musical instruments, paneling, and flooring.

Other Names: American Black Cherry, Choke Cherry, Rum Cherry, Whiskey Cherry, Wild Cherry
